  • Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud has opened the show home at a pioneering housing scheme which is being built by Markey Construction.

Known as Applewood, the 78-home project on the site of the former Cashes Green Hospital in Stroud is being developed by Haboakus - a joint venture between Kevin’s company Hab (Happiness Architecture Beauty) and housing group Greensquare.

The development champions energy efficiency and sustainable living and the completed scheme – due to be finished in early spring 2014 - will include allotments, communal kitchen gardens, shared and private gardens, as well as areas to encourage wildlife.

Kevin McCloud said: “It’s fantastic to see our vision for Applewood taking shape and it’s great to think we’re creating beautiful, aspirational homes that tread lightly on the planet and that people really want to live in.

“Sustainability – in the fullest sense of social integration, affordability and environmental considerations - underpins everything we do and we wanted to work with a local contractor who shared our values. We selected Markey Construction for this project as they were a great fit, as the company is a family–run business that is based in the area with a strong reputation for quality work.”

Markey Construction’s Project Manager Dalton Cullen said: “We’re proud to be associated with this exciting and prestigious development and the opening of the show home is a significant milestone for us.

“We’ve applied the principles of sustainable construction throughout the development and we’ve recycled or reused 98 per cent of the waste generated on site – that’s more than 3250 tonnes. Wherever possible we’ve salvaged materials for use elsewhere on the site, including some slate roof tiles from the former nurses’ home which will be used to tile the new allotment building.”
