  • Sustainable working practices, including a £1.1million investment in a state of the art biomass system, have enabled Hardwicke-based kitchen and furniture manufacturer, Premiere Furniture to cut costs and gain recognition in two national awards programmes.

Thanks to the firm’s green thinking, all the wood waste from Premiere’s factory is now transformed into energy, enabling the company to provide hot water and heating across its 8.5-acre site.

Steve Barton, Standards and Accreditations manager for Premiere, said: “Since introducing the biomass system, we’ve seen significant environmental benefits including zero waste to landfill and a huge reduction in our Carbon Footprint.”

The biomass system has prevented around 2,350 tonnes of wood – the equivalent of almost 17,000 trees – being sent to landfill each year. Additionally, Premiere’s ability to remove its previous gas supply has saved more than 1,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which equates to the annual gas usage of 638 homes.

In 2012 Premiere was a runner up in the National Sustainability Awards. The company was also chosen from 2,000 entrants to be one of four finalists in the National Energy Efficiency Awards.

Committed to recycling, in the last five years Premiere has recycled more than 200 tonnes of cardboard and paper – the equivalent of 132,000 pizza boxes – and almost 50 tonnes of plastic.

The company is a also member of the prestigious Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) which ensures it meets the latest legislation and passes annual checks to confirm environmental and sustainability targets are being met.

Steve Barton added: “Working sustainably has been great for our business as well as the environment. We’d encourage every organisation to support Climate Week by thinking of ways to reduce the amount of energy they use and cutting back on waste. Together, businesses can make a real difference and ensure we create a healthier, greener future for everyone.”
